Mom to Mom of Maine

Celebrating Over 11 Years as a Resource for Moms in Southern Maine!

History

From the very beginning, our goal was to create a group where women could share friendships, information, concerns, tricks-of-the-trade and, most of all, fun.

Mom to Mom has its roots in the Greater Portland Chapter of FEMALE, Formerly Employed Mothers at the Leading Edge. Deborah Kantor founded this chapter in the spring of 1998 and became the very first Leader. In June of 2000, under the leadership of Suzette Bergeron, Nicole Chaison and Belinda Ray, Mom to Mom of Maine was born! When deciding to form Mom to Mom, these dynamic moms wanted to provide all the same services and benefits that FEMALE did, while also sharpening the focus of our group. As they explained in the June 2000 issue of our Mother Matters newsletter, "We felt that what was most important was helping moms feel connected to a larger circle of support. As mothers, we've learned that even though we're performing the world's most important job, a lot of us feel discouraged, overwhelmed and alienated a lot of the time. But by connecting with other mothers, we've felt uplifted, validated and encouraged... we'd like Mom to Mom to be an organization in which members feel respected and supported, no matter what situations we find ourselves in or what our personal decisions are regarding parenting (working schedules, sleeping arrangements, breast- and bottle-feeding, birthing choices, etc.). In short, we'd like a mom's group that encourages self-expression and honesty, because we believe that is key to our emotional health."

Many people have come and gone in the ten plus years that Mom to Mom has been in existence, but our focus is the same. We are here to be a circle of support for moms in Southern Maine!

Mom to Mom's Mission

We provide opportunities for Southern Maine mothers to come together and talk openly, with the goal of establishing a long-term support network. We strive to help mothers maintain their individuality, creativity, confidence and emotional health.

We believe that parenting is the best - and hardest - job that exists, and we seek to connect moms with the resources and people that provide crucial support. Mom to Mom uses the knowledge and energy of its members in creating programs and services that are helpful.
